Long before “matchmaking” became a marketing word, The County Register was already doing it — discreetly, by hand, from a stone lodge on the Earl of Plymouth’s estate. Four decades later, the founder still reads every file.

Two young mothers stood waiting for their children and discussed the same quiet problem — where, exactly, were the professional men and women of rural England supposed to meet one another? There was no answer. So Heather Heber Percy — divorced, raising two daughters, a former Pretty Polly model who had given her evenings to the Samaritans — set about providing one.
She named it Country Partners and ran it from The Lodge on the Plymouth estate. The clients came by word of mouth, as they still largely do.
When the firm outgrew Shropshire, Heather took the unconventional step of mooring its first London office aboard Libra, a Dutch barge in Chiswick Harbour. Members would arrive for their interview by gangplank.
It was an early lesson in the company’s character: serious about its work, never quite conventional about its surroundings. The Mayfair offices came later. The temperament did not change.
Heather chaired the Association of British Introduction Agencies for seventeen years, and afterwards the Dating Agency Association. The County Register has been named Dating Agency of the Year three years running. None of which she mentions unless asked.
What she will tell you is that she still personally oversees the introductions, still picks up the telephone, and still believes the only way to do this work properly is the way she began doing it in 1983 — slowly, by hand, with judgement.

Most members receive their first introduction within four to eight weeks of joining. We don't rush the process — a well-considered introduction is worth more than a fast one. Your matchmaker will keep you informed throughout and will only introduce you to someone they genuinely believe could be the right fit.
Yes, completely. Your photographs and personal details are never published online or placed in any searchable database. Every potential match is verified in person and through LexisNexis before an introduction is made. Meetings are arranged privately. Nobody knows you're a member unless you choose to tell them.
We'll be honest with you about the terms during your consultation — they vary by membership level. What we can tell you is that we take every introduction seriously and won't close your membership having made little effort. If your circumstances change or you need to pause, we'll accommodate that. We're not a subscription service that simply renews in the background; we're a team of people who want this to work for you.
